spark plug removal

do i need a special tool to remove it?
never removed them before , i would like to check the gap

Spark plug socket. They're deep with a rubber or foam insert inside of them to hold the plug so you don't drop it and damage it when you're putting them in or taking them out. Just make sure you get one with thin walls (usually the cheaper ones), some of the thicker walled ones don't fit down the hole very well.

thank you

Use a 6quot; extension with that.

I actually purchased one that was custom made for our cars- I forget where I got it though. Its much easier to remove the plugs w/ the special socket. Anyway the edges taper down allowing it to fit perfectly.

Only torque them to 16 lb-ft.  The tapered seats that the spark plugs go into can easily distort under more torque.  If you don't have a torque wrench, hang tighten them then use a wrench to snug them up a bit and call it a day.

Yep 16's the magic number!!

True wrenchers go by quot;feelquot; when torquing plugs.

thanks

I'm amazed how much some people torque them down.. I've seen a few people yanking on the socket wrench to get them 'tight' so they don't fall in the engine .. Hand tight then snug them up.

People do the same with the oil pan bolt - like it has to be gorilla tight.  Then they wonder why they strip or cross-thread the spark plug holes, or wear down the tapered part of the head to a point where the spark plugs do not seat properly or even torque down at all.

yes but if you're asking how to remove them..... YOU'RE NOT A TRUE WRENCHER!

I use a Snap-On spark plug socket that has a built in swivel and it works great. Now before you say I don't need a swivel, I know that. I bought the socket when I had my Dakota. It' worked great for that too.
